The US Mint experimented with the concept of a
gold dollar in 1836, but it wasn’t until 1849 that the nation saw the
first circulating gold dollars.
Numismatists call these coins Type One gold dollars. Design changes
in 1854 and 1856 led to Type Two and Type Three gold dollars,
respectively.
By the time of the gold dollar release, the Philadelphia Mint was no
longer the only United States coining facility. In 1838, branch mints
were opened in Dahlonega, GA, New Orleans, LA, and Charlotte, NC.
The Charlotte Mint turned out only 11,634 gold dollars in 1849. The
1849-C comes in two varieties: Closed Wreath and Open Wreath. The Open Wreath is unbelievably rare
and virtually unobtainable. However,
the Closed Wreath is very scarce and is a highly desirable target for
collectors.
Buyers of the 1849-C Closed Wreath Type One Gold Dollar have
virtually no long term downside risk in owning this date due to strong
demand from collectors.
