The Flowing Hair Half Dime was produced with
just two dates, 1794 and 1795, though both were actually coined in
1795, combining for a total of 86,416 pieces.
Flowing Hair Half Dimes saw heavy duty amongst the first citizens of
the United States, with very few surviving to this day. There are ten
known varieties of the 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime. All are rare, some
exceedingly so.
The most "common" varieties may have up to 100
survivors. There are likely fewer than ten examples of the scarcest
variety.
What defines a variety for this series? For one thing, could be the
exact positioning of the stars. For example, the first star might
barely touch the tip of the second star, or the 15th start connects
with the bust truncation of Miss Liberty.
Close examination of the lettering also differentiates varieties.
Perhaps the I in LIBERTY is a bit lower than the neighboring B, or the
tops of the letters T and Y are nearly joined. On the reverse, the
positioning of the berries may be tell tale signs.
No matter the variety, all 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dimes are
treasured by collectors. If held for the long term, there is virtually
no downside risk to owning this important rarity. Buy the best specimen
(properly graded) you can afford.
