A type coin
collection consists of representative coins from various series of coins.
Type coins are collected based on the series they exemplify instead of its date
and mintmark. Some collectors express their numismatic interests by
forming a type coin collection. Others prefer to collect by denomination:
perhaps they're fascinated by the history of nickel coin or enthralled by
certain US gold coins. Meanwhile, a large number of hobbyists form
collections in the traditional sense, by seeking an example of every date and
mintmark of a given series, and filling open slots in a coin album.
Whether your passion is to assemble a type set collection or to own at least one
of every double eagle gold coin ever minted (a virtually impossible goal!),
chances are good that some talented coin expert has written a reference book
that will help guide you in your numismatic endeavor.
This section
presents a wide array of high quality reference material. Most of the
books listed below specialize in individual coin series, and are the culmination
of years of study and experience on the part of the author. A few of the
books are broader in scope, covering type coin collecting or early American
coins, for example. A famous coin dealer from many years ago preached "buy
the book before the coin". The deeply researched publications in the
selection below are probably what he had in mind.
As coin collecting
becomes ever more popular, new
books are coming out frequently. If there is a new release that we believe
can assist you with your type coin collection or some other numismatic pursuit,
we'll add it to the list below. If time allows,
a more complete opinion will be posted the
Coin Book Review section. You
can keep informed automatically of all the latest numismatic literary
developments by subscribing to
