The table below displays State Quarter mintage totals. Bear in mind these numbers are only for clad quarters produced at the Denver and Philadelphia mints, and largely represent the quantity of State Quarters in circulation. We obtained State Quarter mintage data directly from the United States Mint.
To determine the location where a State Quarter was minted, look for the mintmark on the obverse side, just below the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto. The mintmark "P" signifies the coin was produced in Philadelphia. A "D" mintmark indicates the quarter originated at the Denver branch mint.

There are a relatively small number of State Quarters bearing the "S" mintmark. These "S" quarters were issued by the San Francisco branch mint as members of yearly "Proof sets", and were not released into general circulation.
Proof coins are struck at least twice on highly polished blanks utilizing top quality dies that are dedicated solely to the production of proof coins. These specially prepared dies produce coins having sharp details, accentuated by a mirror-like field and frosty raised design elements. Proofs are attractively packaged and marketed to collectors at a premium.
