This section contains a
listing of coin pricing books. The primary purpose of these publications
is to help you estimate the value of rare coins, as well as common date
material. In addition, they all feature sections to help the reader
understand the basics of grading, and often touch upon coin history, the minting
process, coin collecting advice, and more. All are heavily illustrated.
Pre-selected individuals contribute to the publishers of coin pricing books
value data obtained from coin auctions, shows, over the counter retail sales,
and coin network activity. The publisher combines the data to arrive at
approximate values for most collectible coins in a range of grades.
Usually, tens of thousands of estimated values are reported on in the typical
coin pricing book.
Readers must understand these prices are ESTIMATES.
If a RED BOOK coin value
for a certain coin is listed at $50.00 for example, don't be surprised to see
the same coin selling at $35.00 from one dealer, or perhaps at $75.00 from
another (possibly both coins are at the same technical grade, but differ
considerably in eye appeal or some other intangible). Coin pricing books
should give you an IDEA of what a coin is worth, but are seldom precise.
However, you can conclude with reasonable confidence that the $50.00 RED BOOK
coin example cited above certainly has an actual value above $25.00, but
somewhere well below $100.
Most coin pricing books are published annually.
Be aware that although you may have a book printed with the current year,
chances are that the information inside was compiled many months ago. If
the coin market has moved a lot since then, the reported prices may be somewhat
out of date.
New value guides come out well before the end of the year.
Some of the 2009 editions came out as early as the first quarter of 2008. We'll be
watching for the announcements, and report here when the new coin pricing books
are available. If time allows,
a more complete opinion will be posted in the
Coin Book Review section. You
