The Latest Review:

Welcome to the coin collector book review section of US Coin Values Advisor.

If you're new to this site, keep reading, otherwise skip down to the categorized links below to access coin collector book reviews.  We have a section  featuring a more extensive list of online coin books. Most of them are not yet reviewed, but have earned their way on this list because of the author's reputation and high publisher standards. Some will be fully reviewed in time.

I am the site webmaster and official reviewer, Daniel J. Goevert. After nearly 40 years of feasting upon US coin books, I guess I'm at least semi-qualified to recognize a useful numismatic resource when I see one.

I write fair, unbiased reviews on coin collecting books and magazines. I do not get paid to write reviews, and I only review books that I myself have read.

How is the Content Rating Derived? The Content Rating is a measure of the depth and quantity of facts presented in a publication. To some readers, the quality of research and breadth of the material is the most important factor in assessing value to a work. These readers, then, should place more emphasis on the Content Rating. A Five-Star rating is the highest possible score.

What Does the "SPR" Rating Reveal? "SPR" is the shorthand notation for Style, Presentation & Readability. More than just a few coin collectors prefer literature that flows easily, is well organized, beautifully illustrated and hard to break away from. Individuals for whom "SPR" resonates more than factual content should watch the "SPR" Rating more closely. A Five-Star rating is tops. Of course, its OK to be vitally interested in both Content and SPR ratings.

How Can I Buy Books Cheaper? If you're like me, you hate to shell out your hard-earned money for stuff that doesn't live up to your expectations. There are a few simple things you can do to possibly avoid buying coin collector books that turn out not to be as good as what you had hoped. First, see what your local library has. Most libraries maintain a selection of numismatic literature, usually a portion of it comprised of relatively new publications. Borrowing books that appear interesting gives you ample opportunity at home to evaluate their usefulness to you. If you decide to go for a purchase, you'll know what you're getting. Secondly, join the American Numismatic Association. For me, the key membership benefit is access to their huge library. If a publisher description interests me, I can check the book out free of charge (though I still have to pay shipping and insurance both ways). If, after careful evaluation, I decide a book is a worthy addition to my personal library, I look to see if Amazon carries it. If so, is a USED edition available? Frequently, USED editions are available and offered at a substantial discount. Much of my numismatic literature collection was purchased USED through Amazon at prices well under $10. You can do the same.
