Sacagawea Dollar (2000-2008)

The Sacagawea Dollar was introduced in the year 2000. The reverse featured an eagle in flight. This obverse-reverse combination remained in effect until 2008.

Starting in 2009, the Sacagawea portrait obverse was retained and matched with an annually changing Native American theme reverse.

As has been the story with other dollar coins in modern times, the Sacagawea Dollar was produced in numbers that far exceeded demand. As long as Americans have a choice between the paper dollar and coin dollar, the paper dollar will win out.

Scant attention has been paid to Sacagawea Dollars as collectibles. One Sacagawea Dollar that has certainly raised eyebrows is the 2000 “Cheerios” variety. You may read about it here.
