Presidential Dollars (2007-2016)

The Presidential Dollar coin first appeared in Feb 2007. A portrait of the first US president, George Washington, was featured on the coin’s obverse.

Four presidential dollars are issued every year. The conclusion of the series is slated to occur sometime around 2016. The end date is not clear because the legislation authorizing the presidential dollar did not address how to handle the issuance of coins commemorating presidents still alive at the time their coin comes up for release.

As of this writing, the release dates for the first 38 presidents, all deceased, is known. Beyond that is uncertain.

There is not a great deal of interest in presidential dollars as collectibles; hence their numismatic coin values are very low, other than error coins. See the table below for approximate retail prices.

While Presidential Dollars may not be all that popular with coin collectors, American numismatics in general has a wide, dedicated following. Since 1793, the US Mint has issued face value coins ranging from half cents to $20 gold double eagles. Collectors of today actively seek to add these types of coins to their holdings. Many are affordable, yet some are valued incredibly high.
