US silver dollar production resumed in 1971 with the introduction of the Eisenhower Dollar. Actually, the "Ikes" released into circulation contained no silver at all, so perhaps a better description is “metallic dollars”

Eisenhower Dollars were discontinued in 1978. Collectors today have only a mild interest in obtaining them; premiums above face value are paid only for examples with little or no wear.

Of course, Eisenhower Dollars with silver content rise nicely in parallel with silver bullion. These coins were produced by the Mint especially for collectors and were never intended for circulation.
