Anthony Dollar (1979-1999)

The Susan B. Anthony Dollar coin was first issued in 1979. Government officials hoped it would reduce demand for the more costly paper dollar bill.

The Anthony Dollar was doomed because of its size similarity to the quarter, and its inability to compete against the far more popular paper dollar.

By the time the coin presses ceased production of the Anthony Dollar in 1981, about 850 million had been struck, many of them held in government vaults due to lack of public interest.

Anthony Dollars were reprised in 1999 for use in several municipal transit systems operating in the eastern US.

Only a few Anthony Dollars have noteworthy numismatic values. Most of them can be purchased at a relatively small cost.
