Roosevelt Dime (1946-Present)
Mint Mark Information

President Franklin Roosevelt died while resting at Warm Springs, GA, on April 12, 1945. News of his death shocked and saddened much of the world. It was his successor, Harry S Truman, who would lead America to final victory in WWII and guide the nation through the early years of the Cold War.

FDR was president for 12 years, by far longer than any other person, holding office through most of the Great Depression and World War II. Upon his death, plans were quickly put into motion to honor his service by placing a coin into circulation bearing his image.

One of the late president’s favorite projects was the “March of Dimes” fundraising campaign to battle polio, a disease which he himself was afflicted. It seemed only natural, then, that the dime was chosen to carry Roosevelt’s portrait.

The new Roosevelt Dime was released to the public just prior to January 30, 1946, FDR’s birthday and the commencement of the March of Dimes annual fundraiser.

From the inception of the Roosevelt Dime in 1946 until 1964, the Mint Mark appeared on the reverse. No Mint Marks were used 1965-1967.

Beginning in 1968 and continuing to the present, the Mint Mark was placed on the obverse. 1980 was the year the “P” Mint Mark, for Philadelphia, was first employed.

The “W” Mint Mark was used for one year, 1996, and was issued in Mint Sets only. The coin photos at right provided courtesy of Goldberg Coins.

There are no Roosevelt Dime key dates (the 1949-S comes the closest). There have been a few Mint goofs, however, that stoke the imagination of coin collectors. Only a couple of 1975-S (No S) dimes are known to exist. The 1968-S (No S) is also very rare and valuable. The 1970-S (No S), 1982-P (No P), and 1983-S (No S) are also worthy acquisitions.
