Liberty Cap, Head Right Half Cent (1794-97)
Mint Mark Information

The US Mint closed down temporarily in September 1793 because of a yellow fever epidemic that swept through Philadelphia. Among the many deaths was Chief Engraver Joseph Wright. His replacement was Robert Scot.

One of Scot's first ambitions was to replace the half cent of 1793 with his own design. Instead of facing left, Scot had Lady Liberty do an about-face to the right, while enlarging both her head and the Liberty Cap.

The Liberty Cap, Head Right Half Cent was produced from 1794 until 1797. There are no mint marks to be found on this coin. In fact, no US half cents carry any mint marks whatsoever. They all came from the Philadelphia Mint, and concluded their run nearly a century before the "P" mint mark was first employed.
