Flowing Hair Half Dime (1794-1795)
Mint Mark Information

The first silver coin struck by the United States intended for general circulation was the 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dime. Even though dated 1794, they were actually produced in March 1795, all 7,756 of them.

This should not be confused with the pattern 1792 Half Disme (the “s” was later dropped). A total of 1500 of these were struck as trial samples and do not qualify as regular issue coins.

A total of 78,660 Half Dimes dated 1795 were struck later in 1795. After that, the Flowing Hair was replaced by the Draped Bust design, beginning in 1796.
