Bicentennial Washington Quarters

This is ninth and final page of our Washington Quarter study, reporting on the Bicentennial Quarters of 1975-76. The previous eight pages contain historical price trends for the 90% Washington Quarters of 1932-64.

Bicentennial Quarters were minted in 1975 and 1976. Based on the design only, it is not possible to distinguish between a Bicentennial Quarter issued in 1975 or 1976, because the same design was used during both those years.

The obverse (i.e. front side) of the Bicentennial Quarter was almost identical to the quarters of 1932-74, the only difference being the presence of the dual date of 1776-1976. The reverse design, created by Jack L. Ahr in a government sponsored contest, features a Colonial drummer and a victory torch encircled by 13 stars. Nearly 1.7 billion general circulation Bicentennial Quarters were struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, combined. About 7 million proof quarters composed of a the "clad" alloy (i.e. the normal copper-nickel composition) coined at the San Francisco Mint were sold to collectors. The San Francisco Mint also produced a special 40% silver Bicentennial Quarter for collectors in both Uncirculated (approx. 11 million mintage) and Proof (approx. 4 million mintage).

Many people erroneously believe Bicentennial Quarters are valuable. The main reason we included them in this study was to dispel this notion. When the quarters first came out, millions of collectors and non-collectors alike, awash in the Bicentennial celebration, set aside multiple examples as keepsakes, never to see the inside of a cash register (**SIDE NOTE** This suited the Mint planners just fine, because the government makes a profit for every coin released to the public through a process called seigniorage. The Mint correctly anticipated a large demand from souvenir seekers, eventually producing an astounding 1.7 billion of the Bicentennial Quarters). How can anything saved in such large quantities become rare and valuable? Of course, specimens grading near perfection are scarce and warrant attention, but the great vast majority of the existing Bicentennial Quarter supply are quite mundane and common.

Of course, we are not trying to discourage anyone from collecting Bicentennial Quarters. We just don't want anyone to get the false impression that these coins are a good choice for investment potential. Always remember, coins should be considered a hobby first and investment second. Bicentennial Quarters are beautifully designed with an inspirational theme, plus they remind many of us of our youth in a simpler time.
